From Gallery Resident Artist Mark Braithwaite's From the Shadows, Zombie Apocalypse collection.
This is the original watercolour of Dance of the Dead; skeletons dance whilst bats and owls circle in purple skies under the Death Moon.
"I based my skeletons on medieval drawings and woodcuts, and updated them. The original pieces had quite an unusual understanding of anatomy, but in a way that's made them even more sinister."
Mark recently got some new Opal paints - this paint gives an iridescent effect to the background, changing tone from different angles. He also uses Schminke Horadam Supergranulation watercolours to create unusual skies.
Mark needed something to entertain himself whilst working in the studio on his City Shadows project over the winter.... he chose to amuse himself by painting zombies and witches. They’ve been a rather unexpected success so he has added more to the collection.
