Description
Purple Paul; an absolutely stunning example of the late, great Bill Tolley's unique style.
The original painting has just arrived at the gallery, selling on behalf of a private collector who no longer has the wall space for the artwork.
The original is painted in acrylic on canvas, in Bill's instantly recognisable textured style. The painting shows a bustling cityscape of the city of London, full of quirky little houses, topped with the dome of St Paul's cathedral. Brightly coloured people crowd around the fountains in Trafalgar Square beneath the landmark of Nelson's Column. The painting is a stunning use of shades of purple, mauve and lilac.
The picture is signed and dated '03 on the front.
Condition is very good - there are a few minor marks on the canvas, which you would expect in a painting more than 20 years old.
The canvas size is larger than usual for Bill's work, with a canvas size of 30x40" plus frame.
The painting has been framed in a champagne coloured dome shaped frame. The frame has some scuffs.
If you can get to York city centre, please do come to view the painting in person. Bill's paintings are fabulous in real life - a photo never does his artwork justice.
This is a large painting, so if you are thinking about getting the painting delivered, please ask us to check that you are in an area our couriers can cover.
As Tolley fans will be aware, Bill sadly passed away in 2011, and his work is very rarely offered for sale.
Here at The Braithwaite Gallery, Bill's work has provided us, and our customers, with much joy in art form, for almost 20 years; we initially discovered his work through publishing house Solomon & Whitehead, who published Bill's first limited editions of his stylised little houses, at the same time as they were publishing the figurative work of our own Mark Braithwaite.
Over the years since, we have handled the sale of many of Bill's original paintings, and watched in awe as they have climbed in price. You will be interested to hear that when we sell one of Bill's paintings on the secondary market, a percentage of the sale goes back to the artist's estate, via the Artist's Resale Right Scheme, handled by the Design & Copyright Society. It seems fitting that his family should continue to benefit from the sale of his beautiful work.
