Charlie's Travels: Pomp & Circumstance
A special addition to the Betty's Travels series from Gallery Resident Artist Mark Braithwaite - Charlie's Travels, the Coronation Edition.
The original series introduced Betty, who likes sightseeing with her friends. She tours the land, bringing a little colour to brighten the day, blissfully unaware of the attention she attracts as she gets mistaken for another, more famous Betty....
In April 2023, King Charles visited York Minster to hand out the Maundy Money. Artist Mark, was of course on hand with his camera.
What better way to commemorate this year's coronation, York style, than with the King strolling along along York's City Walls, near York Minster, as the celebrations go on around him.
The original 'Betty' was drawn by Mark using a mixture of pencils and markers. Betty has been superseded by Charles via the wonders of modern technology; hand drawn digitally on an iPad Pro.
Mark says "This is the first time I've drawn Charles; I hope my drawing looks like him (always ready to do a Royal portrait!)"
